Following protracted disputes with Flemish nationalists over a UN migration pact, Belgian Prime Minister Charles Michel announced to lawmakers on Tuesday that he will visit the King to submit his resignation.
The head of the government tried in the afternoon to rally the opposition in a "coalition of good will", to continue the political work until the elections on May 26.
However, after socialists and environmentalists tabled a motion that would lead to a vote of no confidence, Michel had few options but to announce his intention to resign.
According to the Belgian newspaper Le Soir, Michel is on his way to Laeken to submit his resignation to the King. The most likely outcome is that King Philippe will put this resignation on hold to find "the lowest common denominator between the parties".
