Maltese trust in government is the highest among the European Union (EU) states, the Eurobarometer survey said on Friday.

According to the survey, Maltese government's trust rating has shot up 12 percentage points, now standing at 63 percent - the highest in the EU, together with the Netherlands.

At the same time, the number of those who answered that they 'tend not to trust' the government went down since spring, also by 12 percent. Twelve percent of respondents said they 'don't know'.

Maltese Prime Minister Joseph Muscat was impressed by the new figures, taking to Twitter to say that the Maltese are 'the most convinced about the direction of their country.'

Trust in Parliament rose by an even higher amount, 17 points, to 59 percent, while those who said they 'tend not to trust' Parliament went down by 13 points, leaving 13 percent who said they did not know.

Only 36 percent said they trusted political parties, however, a decrease of 7 percentage points. Still less trusted is the print media, with a trust rating of just 32 percent.

When asked about their financial situation, 92 percent of respondents said it was good and 7 percent saying it was bad. This was also reflected in the general view of the economy as a whole, with 95 percent saying it was good, and only 3 percent saying it was bad.
