Syrian Foreign Ministry said on Wednesday that the Israeli attacks on Syria aimed to prolong the Syrian war, according to the state-run SANA news agency.

The ministry expressed its condemnation to the overnight Israeli missile attack, which targeted military bases west of Damascus, to the UN Security Council.

The ministry said that the Israelis had attacked several military bases and civilian areas in Syrian capital Damascus and its countryside at a time of Christmas.

According to the military, the attacks aimed to "terrorize the Syrian people on such an occasion," adding that its actions don't differ from that of the al-Qaida-linked groups in Syria.

The ministry also charged that the missile attacks were used by the Israelis to divert the attention from their international issues.

Meanwhile, the ministry urged the UN Security Council to shoulder its responsibilities in preserving the international peace and security, adding that it should undertake immediate measures to prevent the Israelis from carrying out their aggression again.

A day earlier, SANA reported that the Israeli missile attack was carried out from inside the Lebanese airspace against areas in the western countryside of Damascus.

It said that a weapon depot was damaged and three soldiers were wounded as a result.
