Turkey successfully accelerated a one-ton bomb to 1.5 times sound speed on its first-ever supersonic track, the country's Industry and Technology Minister announced on Thursday.
"An approximately one-ton ammunition was accelerated to 1.5 times the speed of sound, hitting the target. It was a significant success and historic moment for our defense industry," the minister Mustafa Varank said on Twitter.
Varank noted the U.S.-made Mark-84 bomb moved at 1,850 kilometers per hour on track and successfully penetrated a one-meter thick steel-reinforced concrete wall.
The 2,000-meter-long test track, designed by Turkey's technological institute and inaugurated in October, will be used to test domestic defense products including rocket engines and ejection seat of military aircraft.
