Jordan said Thursday it has received a request from the United Nations to host a meeting between the Yemeni government and Houthi rebels.

Jordanian Minister of Foreign Affairs Ayman Safadi made the remarks at a joint press conference with visiting Yemeni counterpart Khaled Al Yamani.

"The UN Yemen Mission is based in Jordan and we received a request today from UN Envoy on Yemen Martin Griffiths to host a meeting in Jordan," Safadi said.

"Jordan will look into the request as soon as possible in line with our clear stand that supports all efforts that would help lead to resolving the Yemeni crisis in line with clear references leading to ending the suffering of the Yemenis," said the minister.

He added that Jordan will continue to exert all efforts to help resolve the Yemeni crisis.

Safadi also highlighted the need for implementing the agreement that was reached during the Yemeni peace talks held in December in Sweden, calling it an important step to resolve the crisis.

"We support the legitimate Yemeni government and we coordinate with Saudi Arabia and the UAE to make all efforts to help end the crisis in Yemen," said Safadi.

For his part, Al Yamani commended Jordan for being always supportive of Yemen and the legitimate government in Yemen, noting that the kingdom plays a key role in resolving the Yemeni crisis.

"Our coordination with Jordan will continue in all efforts," said the Yemeni official, underscoring the need for implementing the cease-fire agreement reached in Sweden.
