Rwanda targets to raise revenue of 88 million U.S. dollars through its Meetings, Incentives, Conferences, Events and Exhibitions (MICE) tourism strategy within the period of 2019/2020 fiscal year, Rwanda Convention Bureau said Tuesday.

"I am confident we shall achieve our target considering the fact that Rwanda has become a leading conference tourism destination and competitive business and investment hub," said Nelly Mukazayire, chief executive officer of the bureau, at a press briefing in Kigali, capital city of Rwanda.

Rwanda has generated 52 million U.S dollars revenues from hosting international conferences and meetings from July 2018 to Feb. 2019, said Mukazayire.

She highlighted some of international and regional meetings lined up for 2019, including African Fine Coffee Conference and Exhibition, Africa Tech Summit, Aviation Africa Event and Transform Africa Summit.

Year 2018 served as a key milestone for event creation and management whereby 201 events were hosted in Rwanda, she said.

Rwanda Development Board in 2014 introduced the MICE strategy with a view of diversifying the current tourism product offered in the country while complementing existing gorilla tourism, eco-tourism, cultural and community-based tourism.

The central African country and Kigali were ranked the third most popular destinations in Africa for accommodating international meetings and events in International Congress and Convention Association's rankings released in May 2018.
