The death toll of the clashes between forces of the UN-backed government and the eastern-based army in Libya's capital Tripoli has increased to 35, the Ministry of Health said Monday.

A total of 14 were killed in the clashes on Sunday, bringing the total death toll to 35, according to a ministry statement.

The army, led by Khalifa Haftar, launched a military campaign on Thursday to take over western Libya, particularly Tripoli where the UN-backed government is based.

A day earlier, the spokesman of the government forces announced the launch of a military operation against the army troops.

Haftar's army is allied with Libya's eastern-based government, as the North African country is politically divided between two governments in the east and west.

Libya has been struggling to make a democratic transition amid insecurity and chaos since the fall of former leader Muammar Gaddafi's regime in 2011.
