The clashes in Libya's capital Tripoli between forces of the UN-backed government and the eastern-based army have forced 2,800 to flee their homes, a UN official said Monday.

"The escalation of violence in and around Tripoli has caused the displacement of more than 2,800 persons, while blocking emergency services from reaching casualties and civilians, and damaged electricity lines," Maria Ribeiro, UN Humanitarian Coordinator in Libya, said in a statement.

The fighting also affects refugees and immigrants "arbitrarily detained in detention centers in areas of active conflict", the UN official added.

The statement also called for a temporary humanitarian truce to allow safe access and passage of emergency services and civilians in the conflict areas.

The army, led by Khalifa Haftar, launched a military campaign on Thursday to take over western Libya, particularly Tripoli where the UN-backed government is based.

A day earlier, the spokesman of the government forces announced the launch of a military operation against the army troops.

Haftar's army is allied with Libya's eastern-based government, as the North African country is politically divided between two governments in the east and west.

Libya has been struggling to make a democratic transition amid insecurity and chaos since the fall of former leader Muammar Gaddafi's regime in 2011.
