Mexico's government and the Office of the UN High Commissioner for Human Rights (OHCHR) on Tuesday signed an agreement to jointly tackle violence in the country.

The UN would join Mexico's efforts in tackling violence as the country has more than 40,000 missing persons and high rates of homicide and femicide, said the UN High Commissioner for Human Rights and Former Chilean President Michelle Bachelet.

The UN agency is expected to provide advice and technical assistance to Mexico's newly-created National Guard.

Since taking office on Dec. 1, President Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador has attached great importance to the creation of a new anti-crime force.

The National Guard is expected to eventually have 150,000 members, including military and civilian personnels, which will be allocated to 266 regional units.
