U.S. President Donald Trump's repeated threat to close the U.S-Mexico border is a "very bad idea" and would result in huge costs for both countries, Mexico's Foreign Minister Marcelo Ebrard said Wednesday.

Via his Twitter account, Ebrard said that new communication lines will be established with new officials at the U.S. Department of Homeland Security (DHS) in order to discuss the effects of a closure.

Since the beginning of April, crossing various checkpoints along the border has experienced hours-long delays after the U.S. government reassigned inspectors to deal with the growing number of migrants from Central America.

At the checkpoint in the northern Mexican city of Ciudad Juarez which borders the U.S. city of El Paso, Texas, truck drivers have reported a slowdown in cargo inspections resulting in reported wait time of up to 20 hours.

Ebrard said he is reviewing the situation at checkpoints in the border cities of Ciudad Juarez, Tijuana and Nuevo Laredo with industry associations in an attempt to find the best solutions to normalize flow.

An estimated goods of 1.7 billion U.S. dollars cross the border every day and close to 1 million people cross the border for work, school, to do business or as tourists, according to data from the Mexican Foreign Ministry.
