Germans' interest in the European elections has risen again, with 48 percent of voters now saying they were "very interested" in the elections, according to the poll ZDF-Politbarometer published on Friday.

This was an increase of 7 percentage points compared to two weeks ago, when 41 percent of Germans said they were "very interested" in the upcoming European elections in May.

Since the last European elections in 2014, when only 28 percent of German respondents said they were interested, the percentage of Germans who are interested in the European elections has almost doubled.

According to the poll, 32 percent of respondents said they would vote for the ruling center-right Christian democratic political alliance of two political parties in Germany, namely the Christian Democratic Union of Germany (CDU) and Christian Social Union in Bavaria (CSU), in the upcoming European elections.

Nineteen percent of Germans said they would vote for the Green Party if the European Parliament were to be elected tomorrow.

The Greens would therefore overtake the Social Democratic Party (SPD), which received support from 18 percent of Germans in the current Politbarometer.

As in the last poll, the populist far-right party Alternative for Germany (AfD) continued to receive ten percent of the votes, while the liberal Free Democratic Party (FDP) remained at seven percent. All other German parties together achieved eight percent of voters' favor.

In light of political developments in the European Union, the recently agreed postponement of Britain's withdrawal from the EU to the end of October was viewed negatively by 60 percent of Germans.

Only 32 percent of the respondents approved the scenario of a Brexit postponement of several months. Eight percent said they did not know how they felt about it.
