The European Union (EU) launched electronic components and systems for European leadership (ECSEL), a public-private partnership worth about 5 billion euros (6.84 billion U.S. dollars), to boost Europe's electronics design and manufacturing capabilities, announced the European Commission on Tuesday.

The EU would invest 1.18 billion euros in the ECSEL joint technology initiative (JTI), which will be provided through the research and innovation program Horizon 2020. Industrial partners will contribute more than 2.34 billion euros, while 26 EU member states and associated states will invest 1.17 billion euros.

ECSEL will help industry launch new pilot projects and build on the 1.79 billion euros already invested in existing pilot lines and demonstrators.

These projects brought together European manufacturers, technology companies, chip designers, software developers, researchers and universities at the early stages of product and service development, bringing research closer to market.

In addition to pilot projects, ECSEL will cover technology developments in electronic chips, in cyber-physical and in smart systems and their integration into application areas for resource-efficient transport, improved citizen privacy, sustainable energy generation and affordable health. Special focus was on trust, security and user friendliness of technology.

Vice-President of the European Commission Neelie Kroes said she was happy that this partnership was now active, and "it shows that the EU and member states can work together quickly when there is a clear case for action."

ECSEL is the core of the electronics strategy for Europe, established in May 2013, to mobilize 100 billion euros in private investments and create 250,000 jobs in Europe by 2020. (1 euro = 1.37 U.S. dollars)
