The Zambian government on Friday unveiled its 2019 budget, with the target of growing the economy to 4 percent.

The 86.8 billion Zambian Kwacha (about 7.2 billion U.S. dollars) budget will see domestic revenues accounting for 64.6 percent while 2.2 percent will be support from cooperating partners and the balance of 33.2 percent will be financed from domestic and foreign sources.

Minister of Finance Margaret Mwanakatwe, who unveiled the budget with the theme "Inclusive Delivering Fiscal Consolidation for Sustainable and Inclusive Growth," further said the government has projected the economy to grow at around 4 percent this year from 3.4 percent in 2017.

The Zambian minister said the 4 percent economic growth in 2018 was due to improved performance in sectors such as mining, construction, manufacturing, wholesale and retail trade as well as stable and reliable energy supply.

She said in 2019 the government will continue to promote not only broad-based sustainable and inclusive growth, but will also address the high unemployment and poverty levels among people, create space for private sector growth and entrenching macroeconomic stability through fiscal consolidation.

"Government has laid the ground for a more inclusive economy. However, we acknowledge that growth remains below our country's potential and poverty remains high, especially in rural areas," she said.

According to her, to address the challenges, the government intends to encourage the private sector to investment more as well as reduce the fiscal deficit and maintain debt within sustainable levels.
