Sales reached 233 million U.S. dollars during Chile's three-day CyberMonday shopping spree, which offers special deals to consumers who shop online, trade association Santiago Chamber of Commerce (CCS) said Thursday.

Now in its eighth year, the online shopping event took place from Oct. 8-10 and registered 1,737,000 online transactions.

"We are very happy because we hit our goal of surpassing 230 million U.S. dollars in sales, which is what we wanted," said Yerka Yukich, executive secretary for the CCS's Digital Economy Center.

Footwear and clothing were the areas with the most growth in sales this year, while the real estate sector "did very well in apartment sales", the CCS said.

No bad practices or fraud were detected among the associated brands, Yukich said. She also highlighted the growth of e-commerce in the South American country, which has grown at rates of 30 to 35 percent.

"People prefer to dedicate their free time to other things and online shopping allows people to buy from home, office or the park, which is much more comfortable," Yukich said.

Last week, Chile's Minister of the Economy, Development and Tourism, Jose Ramon Valente said online shopping "has become one of the strong favorites" with 6 million Chileans preferring this option to buy products, almost one third of the whole population.

Some 280 brands took part in CyberMonday and operated under the self-regulation guidelines set for the event.

The CCS is a nonprofit Chilean trade organization founded in 1919, which brings together more than 2,000 small-medium-and large-sized businesses.
