Israel's Hebrew University of Jerusalem has set up a cannabis research laboratory with an investment of 2.3 million U.S. dollars, a local website reported Monday.

The new research center "Lumir Lab" is named after as its chief scientist Lumir Hanus, a Czech chemistry professor who is one of the world's leading cannabis researchers, the financial website Calcalist said.

Over the past 50 years, Hanus has identified and isolated all the active substances in the cannabis plant, including more than 140 cannabinoids and more than 1,000 other active substances.

Currently, almost all cannabis products have no scientific ground, preventing the medical community from supporting cannabis-based treatments.

The target of the new lab is to provide new tools and solutions while setting an international quality standard.

The first study will be carried out for Gynica, a research and development company specializing in cannabinoids in gynecology.

The goal is to develop cannabinoids based on endometriosis, a disease that affects some 180 million women around the world.

The lab will provide clinical validation and a wide range of solutions for companies operating in the medical cannabis industry.

The intellectual property by the laboratory will be exported for production and commercialization in the European market, which is expected to be the world's largest by 2025.

The Israeli company Asana Bio Group, the only Israeli company holding an active cannabis production license in Europe, funded the establishment of the lab.
