Most of the states in the United States had lower or stable unemployment rates in September, the U.S. Labor Department reported on Friday.

According to the department, nine states had a lower unemployment rate in September, and the jobless rate for 37 states remained stable from a month earlier.

The report showed that only Colorado, North Dakota, Maine and Wyoming had a higher unemployment rate in September.

Among all states, Hawaii had the lowest unemployment rate of 2.2 percent in September, while Alaska had the highest jobless rate of 6.5 percent, said the department.

The department also showed that 16 states had a lower unemployment rate from a year earlier.

The department also concluded that 37 states added nonfarm payroll jobs and 13 states were essentially unchanged over the year.

U.S. unemployment rate fell to 3.7 percent in September after standing at 3.9 percent for two months, hitting the lowest level since December 1969, the Labor Department reported earlier this month.
