Canadian maple syrup production this year fell to its lowest level in three years, according to Statistics Canada Wednesday.

The maple syrup production tumbled 21.7 percent to 44.5 million liters in 2018. The total value of Canadian maple products fell 22 percent to 384.4 million Canadian dollars (about 288 million U.S. dollars) while the price of syrup remained relatively unchanged.

Maple syrup production was down in every syrup-producing province except Ontario and Nova Scotia.

Output in Ontario rose 9.4 percent to 2.1 million liters, the most since 2011, while Nova Scotia produced 250,000 liters of maple syrup in 2018, 54,500 liters more than in 2017 when production was low due to unfavorable weather conditions.

Quebec produced 40.4 million liters of maple syrup, down 22.4 percent from 2017 due to unusually late snow and cold, while New Brunswick output fell 34.5 percent to 1.6 million liters.

Quebec produces about 72 percent of the world's maple syrup, with the rest of Canada producing 8 percent and the United States producing 20 percent.
