The canal city of Venice, famed for its romatic ambience, was threatened by rising water levels, forcing tourists to come up with some novel ways to keep their feet dry on Friday.

A spell of bad weather had drenched Italy for days, inundating roads and creating flask-floods.

The bars and restaurants on the sides of canals are almost about to be inundated by water as water lapped around the legs of tables and chairs. Many tourists have started to cover their shoes with plastic bags.

The city remained on alert for rising water levels until Saturday. The Italian met department expects the rains to stop over the weekend.
