A Japanese film festival opened here Wednesday, aiming at boosting cultural exchange and strengthening mutual friendship between Myanmar and Japan.

Sponsored by the Japanese Embassy in collaboration with the Japan Foundation, the four-day Japanese Film Festival 2008 in Yangon's Thamada Cinema will last until Jan. 26.

Three Japanese movies -- "The Twilight Samuri", "Dora Heita" and Kikujiro No Natsu" are being screened.

Meanwhile, another four-day Japanese film festival is also scheduled to take place at the Winlight Cinema in Myanmar's second largest city of Mandalay on Feb. 25-28.

The Japanese film festival has been held in Myanmar annually since 2000. Last year's Japanese festival was also held in the two Myanmar cities in February and March respectively, introducing three movies -- "Thway," "the Stars Converges" and "Not Yet."

Japanese films started to become popular in Myanmar in the 1980s after some movies such as "Take Me Away," "Princes and Photographer" and "On the Road" were screened in the country.
