Romania's famous film director Sergiu Nicolaescu died at the age of 82 on Thursday, following surgical complications.
Nicolaescu, who was suffering from a benign chronic digestive disorder, underwent a laparoscopic surgery last Wednesday at the Elias Hospital in Bucharest.
Director, actor and producer Nicolaescu was born on April 13, 1930 in the southwestern city of Targu-Jiu, the county of Gorj.
He was best known for his historical films, such as "Mihai Viteazul" (Michael the Brave), appeared in 1970. In January 2010, the film ranked 3rd in a ranking drawn up by the U.S. film website IMDb (Internet Movie Data base) in the category "Historical Movies," his production becoming the most watched Romanian movie worldwide.
Considering the number of his productions (over 50 feature movies), Nicolaescu is the most productive Romanian film director by far, at the same time being compared to the most active film-makers worldwide.
Many of his films, including "Mihai Viteazul", "The last bullet", "Hot days", "Revenge", have screened in China and were well received.
After the social system change in 1989, Nicolaescu began to engage in the political life and became a senator of the National Salvation Front and then of the Social Democratic Party. |
