Chinese actress Tang Wei fell victim to a $35,000 fraud in Shanghai after being persuaded over the phone to wire money to a suspect, the Xinhua News Agency reported on Sunday.
Xinhua, citing local police, reported that Tang was shooting for a film on Saturday afternoon when she received a phone call and was persuaded to go to a bank and wire the 210,000 yuan ($35,000).
Shanghai's Songjiang district police are investigating the case after receiving a complaint from Tang. The police did not reveal what the suspect said that persuaded the actress to urgently wire the money.
Tang shot to international fame playing a Chinese student activist who seduces a Japanese-allied spy chief in the World War II-era spy thriller "Lust, Caution."
