Despite his controversial comments about women at the primary debate, New York real estate mogul Donald Trump continues to lead Republic presidential field in Iowa, whose caucus is the all-important kickoff to 2016 election season, a new national poll showed.

According to a Suffolk University poll released on Tuesday, Trump continues to top the crowed Republican field with 17 percent support, 5 percent ahead of the runner-up Wisconsin Governor Scott Walker, a long-term darling of conservative Republicans in Iowa.

The Suffolk University poll, covering 500 Iowans who expressed willingness to participate in the Republican caucuses next year, was one of the first quantitative measures of the impact of Thursday's debate in Cleveland, Iowa.

Though still being the front-runner of the Republican field, Trump may face mounting opposition in the future as his inflammatory comments and lack of any substantial talks about policies would make more supporters drift away, the poll indicated.

Trump clashed with a Fox News moderator, and later made comments about her that many interpreted as crudely sexist.

After the first debate last week, 55 percent said they were less comfortable with him as a candidate for president, and 23 percent said they were more comfortable.
