The number of naturalizations in Austria increased 4.4 percent in 2016 to 8,626 new citizenships, Statistics Austria revealed on Thursday.
Of them, 1,262 people were from Bosnia and Herzegovina, accounting for 14.6 percent of the total, the highest proportion among the others.
This was followed by Turks, Serbians, and Kosovars. And 35 percent of the total were born in Austria, while 37.2 percent were aged under 18 years, the statistics office noted.
The year 2003 saw the record high set at 45,112 naturalizations, following which the numbers dropped steadily to a low of 6,190 in 2010. Since 2011, however, the figure has been back to a rising trajectory.
