Two people are confirmed dead while a third person is missing after massive wave swept them out to sea on the Spanish island of Tenerife, Spanish press reported Thursday.

The incident happened Wednesday evening, when the pair, who were identified as a 35-year-old local man and a 60-year-old woman from mainland Spain, were bathing in a natural swimming pool close to Santiago Port on the north of the island.

Witnesses described how the pool was suddenly hit by a massive wave, sweeping the pair and a third person out to sea.

Rescue services were able to later recover the bodies of the man and the woman, but despite the efforts of rescue services, who scoured the area with patrol boats and a helicopter, the third person has still to be found and the search continued on Thursday.

Meanwhile, a fourth person who dived into the sea to try and help was able to swim to safety.
