India's presidential election will be held on July 17, the country's independent Election Commission announced Wednesday.

The incumbent President Pranab Mukherjee's five-year tenure expires on July 24 and so far, he has not indicated his intention to seek a second term in office.

"The voting will take place on July 17 and the counting will happen on July 20. Members of Parliament are requested to vote at the Parliament, while Members of Legislative Assemblies are required to vote in their respective state capitals," Chief Election Commissioner Nasim Zaidi said.

This year, the presidential poll will be a closely fought contest as the country's main opposition parties are uniting to put up their candidate against the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party's (BJP) choice.

However, neither the BJP nor the opposition parties have announced their candidate for the presidential poll.
