There were more households and individuals living in absolute poverty in Italy in 2016 than in the previous year, national statistics agency ISTAT reported Thursday.

The number of households in total poverty rose from 6.1 percent in 2015 to 6.3 percent in 2016, the ISTAT report said.

That percentage is equal to 1.62 million households and 4.74 million people. Households made up of foreigners accounted for the biggest share of those living in the poorest conditions 25.7 percent, compared to all-Italian households at 4.4 percent, ISTAT pointed out.

The increase in the absolute poverty rate was concentrated among households with at least one non-Italian member, and among those with three or more children, according to the statistics agency.

Individuals living in absolute poverty were also on the rise, from 7.6 percent in 2015 to 7.9 percent last year, ISTAT said.
