An extremist accused of being a carrier of arms of Bangladesh's most horrific terror attack that killed 22 hostages last July, has been held in the country's Natore district, some 200 km northwest of capital Dhaka, early Friday.

Asaduzzaman, a senior police official in Bangladesh's northwestern region, told journalists Friday that a team of law enforcers arrested one of the key Dhaka cafe attack planners, Abu Jara Rashed, who had also carried arms and grenades from Chapainawabganj district, some 302 km northwest of capital Dhaka, to the capital Dhaka for the attack.

He said Rashed, who was wanted in a case filed in connection with the terrorist attack in Dhaka's diplomatic enclave Gulshan on July 1, 2016, will be taken to the capital city for further interrogation.

Monirul Islam, chief of Dhaka Metropolitan Police's Counter Terrorism and Transnational Crime unit, said Rashed, who operated under the alias 'Rash', was arrested from a Natore bus stand at 5:30 a.m. (local time) on Friday by a team of law enforcers led by his unit. He said the suspect belongs to the Neo-JMB.

"We're bringing him to Dhaka. He will be taken to court and shown arrested in the Dhaka cafe attack case."

According to the official, Rashed maintained close connections with many already arrested and killed cafe attack designers.

Bangladesh police have reportedly so far hunted down and killed at least 40 militants linked to the cafe attack, including mastermind Tamim Chowdhury who was killed in a police raid on Aug. 27 last year.

Islam said the militant suspect is a member of "Neo-JMB", an offshoot of banned militant outfit Jamaatul Mujahideen Bangladesh (JMB), which is blamed for the attack.
