The Spanish government aims to stop the independence poll in the country's northeastern region of Catalonia, which was discussed on Wednesday at the region's parliament.

Spain's Deputy Prime Minister Soraya Saenz de Santamaria said the government had initiated all legal procedures needed in order to deal with the issue, a move that is backed by the main opposition party, the Spanish Socialist Party, and the center-right party Ciudadanos.

"The government knows what to do and we will do so," Saenz de Santamaria said, explaining that the Catalan parliament had infringed previous sentences by Spanish courts in discussing and trying to pass a law to call for a referendum.

The regional government of Catalonia, the Generalitat, plans to call for an independence poll on Oct. 1, but according to the Spanish government, it breaches the Spanish constitution and is illegal.
