Economic diplomacy remains Ethiopia's top priority target: PM

Ethiopian Prime Minister Hailemariam Desalegn on Tuesday revealed that economic diplomacy will remain his country's major priority target in the international diplomacy spectrum.

Desalegn made the remarks during a discussion held with Ethiopian ambassadors, diplomats and senior heads of the Ethiopian Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

According to Desalegn, economic diplomacy, along with regional peace and security issues, is given major priority concern as far as the east African country's foreign relations is concerned.

He also advised Ethiopian diplomats to undertake more efforts to bring Foreign Direct Investment (FDI) and to search for potential investors while accelerating technology transfer as per the plan set out in Ethiopia's second 5-year Growth and Transformation Plan (GTP-II), effective as of 2015.

The premier also stressed his country's other priority targets, which mainly aspires regional peace and security targets.

Desalegn further urged the Ethiopian Ministry of Foreign Affairs to build its capacity and carry out strategic activities to accomplish its missions.

He also indicated the need to work with research institutes so as to strengthen the country's public diplomacy endeavors to bring together intellectuals, businesspersons, investors and the public with Ethiopia's foreign relations.

The annual conference of Ethiopian ambassadors and consul generals, which kicked off on August 31, had evaluated the east African country's export trade performance, and the FDI flow.

The annual conference, among other things, also evaluated performance of the diplomatic works that had been implemented during the just concluded Ethiopian fiscal year 2016/17.
