The illiteracy rate of Brazilians aged 15 and above slightly dropped to 7.2 percent in 2016 from 8 percent in 2015, the country's official statistics agency IBGE announced Thursday.

According to the agency's National Household Survey, Brazil has 11.8 million people who cannot read or write.

The figure indicates that Brazil is behind its goal set in the country's National Education Plan, which determines that the illiteracy rate should have been reduced to 6.5 percent by 2015.
