After three years of contraction, the Brazilian industry reported a 2.5-percent annual growth in 2017, showed data released Thursday by the state statistics agency IBGE.

The IBGE said the Latin American country's industrial output increased after a decline of 3 percent, 8.3 percent and 6.4 percent respectively in the previous three years.

The agency attributed the 2.5-percent increase last year to a positive economic performance in the majority of the sectors covered by its assessment.

For example, the moto vehicles sector reported a 17.2-percent increase in 2017, contributing greatly to the country's industrial growth. Other marked contributors include sectors of mining and quarrying, computer equipment, basic metals, food products, as well as machinery and equipment, among others.

At the same time, petroleum products and biofuels reported a 4.1-percent fall in output in 2017, the IBGE said. Declines were also seen in such sectors as transportation equipment and pharmaceutical products.
