Despite a rapid increase in the number of female fund managers in China, gender imbalance remains serious in the investment sector, data showed Thursday.

Only one in four funds had a female portfolio manager, though the number of female managers in the country has more than doubled over the past three years to 402 as of Wednesday, according to data from Wind, a leading information service provider.

The proportion was far below the country's general workforce gender ratio. Women accounted for 43.1 percent of the total workforce at the end of 2016, according to the latest statistics from the National Bureau of Statistics.

Female managers ran more than 2,800 mutual funds as of March, accounting for 28 percent of the total, and they focused on less risky investment portfolios compared to male managers.
