The Mariinsky Orchestra and Mariinsky Chorus will perform "Khovanschina," Russian musician Modest Mussorgsky's opera, at the National Center for the Performing Arts (NCPA) in Beijing on April 17.

This will be the first time that the entire concert version of Khovanschina is performed in China, and well-known Russian conductor Valery Gergiev will conduct the opera, according to the NCPA.

The opera tells a political and religious story set in Russia in the 17th century.

The orchestra will also perform Mussorgsky's "Overture to Khovanschina," "Night on Bald Mountain," as well as "Songs and Dances of Death" at the NCPA on April 16.

As one of the oldest musical ensembles in Russia, the history of the Mariinsky Orchestra dates back to the early 18th century. Gergiev has directed the orchestra since 1988.
