Ukrainian prominent film director, screenwriter and actress Kira Muratova has passed away aged 83, local media reported Thursday.

The government-run Ukrinform news agency said that Muratova died on Wednesday in Ukraine's southern Odessa city, where she has lived and worked for many years.

Born in the city of Soroky, now Moldova, in November 1934, Muratova became a film director at Odessa Film Studio in 1961.

During her professional career, Muratova directed some 20 films, for which she received dozens of Ukrainian and foreign awards, including a "Silver Bear" of the 1990 Berlin Film Festival for the movie "The Asthenic Syndrom."

Ukrainian President Petro Poroshenko has expressed his condolences to the family and friends of the film director.
