BEIJING, Oct. 28 (Gwadar Pro) – As one of the key projects of China-Pakistan Economic Corridor (CPEC), Matiari to Lahore ±660 kV High Voltage Direct Current (HVDC) Transmission Line Project has debugged its Lahore converter station recently, marking the historic highest voltage level of Pakistan's national grid.

The Matiari-Lahore transmission project is the first HVDC line in Pakistan. After putting into operation, it will effectively alleviate the power shortage in the capital city Islamabad and Punjab Province, and improve local people’s living standards. It also has great significance in deepening the construction of CPEC and promoting China-Pakistan energy cooperation.

With a total investment of US$1.658 billion, the initial construction works were started in December 2018 and scheduled to be commissioned on March 1, 2021. The 660kV HVDC transmission line stretches from Matiari in the province of Sindh to the Nankana Sahib district near Lahore, involving two converter stations, 886 kilometers of DC transmission lines and related facilities.

As the only power transmission project under the "Priority Implementation" list of CPEC, the DC project is an important measure of State Grid Corporation of China (SGCC) in response to the Belt and Road Initiative, and a compelling result of deepening international cooperation on production capacity. It also helps the construction of CPEC and brings new opportunities for the internationalization of power standards.

The DC project is the first overseas project of China Electric Power Equipment and Technology Co.Ltd. that adopts the BOOT (build-own-operate-transfer) model. The construction works are in steady progress amidst the COVID-19 epidemic outbreak, according to the official website of SGCC.

The project has created more than 7,000 jobs for the local residents, purchased a large number of local cement, steel and other engineering materials, and adopted several innovative construction methods to build a 205 kilometers electric grid in a single month, according to the executing company. Moreover, the project department donated rice, flour and other anti-epidemic supplies to the people of Punjab and Sindh, which was highly appreciated by the local governments and people.

In addition, the design, construction, operation and maintenance of the project are completely based on Chinese standards, truly realizing "Made in China", which will drive Chinese design, DC electrical equipment and technology to "go global" in the future.
