French biopharmaceutical company Sanofi is showcasing innovative therapies in fields such as immunology, rare diseases, oncology and neurology at the third China International Import Expo being held in Shanghai on Nov 5-10.

"The CIIE is an opportunity for Sanofi to demonstrate our innovation-driven and patient-centric vision under the theme of 'Better Health, Better Future Through Innovation'," said Paul Hudson, CEO of Sanofi.

He sees the expo as a platform to showcase Sanofi's research and development efforts and "possible breakthrough medicines that we could launch in the future for patients in China."

China is at the core of Sanofi's long-term strategy, Hudson said. "We have been in the country since 1982, working to improve the lives of millions of Chinese people and helping the government achieve its 'Healthy China 2030' ambition."

With the country's health priorities in mind, Sanofi is accelerating its transformation to provide innovative medicines and vaccines, as well embracing the fast-moving digital revolution, according to Hudson.

He said: "Sanofi is in China for China, with an end-to-end footprint; from R&D to manufacturing to the supply of medicines and vaccines."

Some of the recent collaborative projects between the company and its Chinese partners include the signing of a strategic cooperation agreement on vaccine innovation between Sanofi and the government of Shenzhen in South China's Guangdong province.

The goal of the cooperation, according to Hudson, is to jointly promote international cooperation on vaccine research and development and improve access to vaccines.

Another project, currently under construction, is a global R&D operation center in the Southwest China city of Chengdu, which "focuses on digital innovation and big data analysis".

The COVID-19 pandemic has brought Sanofi's people closer and made them more committed, according to Hudson.

"What we do, as a company and an industry, has never been so important," he said. "COVID-19 has brought Sanofi's teams around the world closer to their purpose and to each other."

In response, Sanofi switched its interactions with healthcare professionals to digital communication technologies.

Since the beginning of February, Sanofi China has conducted more than 250,000 hours of online training for its staff members and healthcare professionals, according to the company.

Despite complexities created by the pandemic, Sanofi remains focused on its strategic priorities including China, said Hudson.

Sanofi China will continue to accelerate the introduction of innovative medicines and vaccines for people across the country.

"We estimate that we will introduce more than 25 new medicines and vaccines by 2025," said Hudson.

He added, "Digital innovation will also be embedded in all of our activities, from R&D to medical communication, to partnerships with large companies and startups, working hand in hand to provide tailored healthcare solutions for Chinese patients."

To achieve the long-term vision of Sanofi China, the company will continuously work to attract and develop top Chinese talent, Hudson noted.
