The Summer Palace, a vast imperial garden of the Qing Dynasty (1644-1911) and a popular tourist attraction in Beijing, has upgraded parts of its commercial space and reopened to tourists on Thursday.

After a one-year facelift, nine new shops selling products such as coffee, jewelry, makeup, clothing, tea, stationery, ice cream and pastry, are expected to bring fresh experiences for visitors to the ancient imperial garden.

The renovation of the commercial space was designed on the premise of protecting and inheriting the architectural style of the Summer Palace. Plaques fitting the garden's style are hung at the entrance of the shops instead of commercial billboards. It was also required that all interior decorations not harm the shape, structure or original appearance of the ancient buildings.

The area of renovation accounts for 20 percent of the park's total commercial space. Representatives of the Summer Palace say they will continue to upgrade and improve products and services to promote business at the park.
