The Sukhoi T-50 took off from an airfield in the Far Eastern city of Komsomolsk-on-Amur on Friday, Olga Kayukova said.

"The flight lasted 47 minutes. All the tasks set for the first flight were conducted successfully," Kayukova was quoted as saying by the Interfax news agency.

The new jet's stability and control were good, and all of its systems worked smoothly during the flight, she said.

Intensive test flights were expected to be performed near Moscow and in the Astrakhan region, Interfax reported.

"There is every reason to believe that the Russian fifth-generation fighter will start entering service in the Air Force from 2015 as planned," Interfax quoted an unnamed source as saying.

The Sukhoi T-50 was designed to rival the U.S.-made F-22 Raptor and F-35 Lightning II fighter jets.

It will be armed with next-generation air-to-air, air-to-surface and air-to-ship missiles and has two 30-mm cannons, according to the RIA Novosti news agency.

The T-50, whose combat capability has been greatly enhanced, will replace the MiG-29 Fulcrum and Su-27 Flanker fighters.
