The seventh Indian Ocean Island Games (IOIG) closed on Sunday after 10-day competition in 16 sports among over 2,000 athletes from six out of seven island members.
Madagascan Prime Minister Charles Rabemananjara declared the end of the games at a mass gathering inside Mahamasina stadium here.
He reaffirmed president Marc Ravalomanana's promise to send all athletes who won gold medals during the games to China to attend the Olympic Games in Beijing, scheduled in August next year.
Ravalomanana announced in his opening address on Aug. 9 that the government would send all gold medal winners to China to attend the Olympic games.
Rabemananjara said that his government realized its objective of making the games the best in IOIG's 28-year history.
With 101 gold medals, 79 silvers and 56 bronzes, the Madagascan team took the lead both in gold medal tally and the total number of medals, followed by Reunion, which took 74 golds, 78 silvers and 74 bronzes.
Mauritius took third place with 35 gold medals, 55 silvers and 83 bronzes while the tiny island nation of Seychelles took the forth place with 35 golds, 27 silvers and 37 bronzes.
This is the first time that Madagascar won the first place in IOIG games since 1990.
With absence of teams from Maldives, the IOIG games were participated in by athletes from Comoros, Madagascar, Mauritius, Seychelles and the French overseas provinces of Mayetta and Reunion.
Antonio Gopal, President of Seychelles Olympic and Commonwealth Games Association announced at the closing ceremony that next IOIG games would take place in Seychelles in 2011.
The closing ceremony was held amid traditional dances and splendid fireworks. |
