A group of marathon runners Wednesday urged the Los Angeles City Council to hold the annual Los Angeles Marathon before its planned date in May to reduce the chance of heat-related problems among participants.
The race was pushed forward to May 25 this year from its traditional early March slot in its 23-year history.
The date of the L.A. Marathon has been a controversial issue for several years. Local church ministers in the route area complained about the impact on their Sunday services in the past.
There was a proposal to hold the event on President's Day in February this year, but that was later changed to the Memorial Day holiday on a Monday, which is rare as most marathons are held on Sundays.
Advocated by some marathon runners, a new proposal has been made to city officials to look at moving the date to an earlier time in the year to evade summer temperatures, according to the City Council. |
