Platini, EU officials to discuss soccer violence, racism
Last Updated(Beijing Time):2007-02-09 09:10
EU Justice and Security Commissioner Franco Frattini has invited newly-elected UEFA president Michel Platini to meet together to discuss football hooliganism and racism, the European Commission (EC) said here on Thursday.

The initiative by EU came after the death of an Italian police officer last Friday at a football match between bitter Sicilian rivals Catania and Palermo.

"I can confirm that Vice President Frattini has sent an invitation to Michel Platini to discuss the subject of violence and racism in the football world," said EC spokesman Friso Ascam Abbing.

Given the urgency of the meeting it would be held "in the days and weeks to come," he added, although no time or place has been agreed yet.

Among the likely points on the agenda will be "whether or not football hooligans can travel freely to football grounds in the EU," said Ascam Abbing.

The talks will also discuss the possibility of an EU-level approach to the problem "with of course the cooperation of UEFA and, if possible, fan associations," he added.
