Hingis, Bartoli knocked out at Los Angeles tennis tournament

Marion Bartoli fell in the first round of the 600,000-dollar Los Angeles WTA hard court tournament on Tuesday.

The sixth seed from France, who received a first-round bye, fell to Russian Maria Kirilenko 7-6 (7-2), 6-3.

Bartoli, who had never made it past the fourth round in a GrandSlam until her Wimbledon run, had lost in the second round at Stanford and third round at San Diego prior to her early exit here.

Bartoli had won her two previous encounters with Kirilenko.

Seventh seed Martina Hingis also suffered early exit with a 6-2,2-6, 6-4 loss to Sania Mirza of India.

A finalist here in 1998, Hingis was making her first appearance in the tournament since 2001.

The Swiss star had faced the 20-year-old Mirza three times - all in 2006 - and won twice.

Eighth seed Dinara Safina of Russia also fell at her first hurdle, losing her second-round match to Ukraine's Kateryna Bondarenko 6-2, 7-5.

In first-round matches on Tuesday, defending champion Elena Dementieva of Russia defeated countrywoman Ekaterina Makarova 6-3,6-1 and Shahar Peer of Israel dispatched wild card Dominika Cibulkova of Slovakia in straight sets, 6-2. 6-3.

Katarina Srebotnik of Slovenia managed to get past American Bethanie Mattek, 6-4, 7-5.

Top seed Maria Sharapova will open her campaign with a second-round match against Greece's Eleni Daniilidou, who beat France's Aravane Rezai 3-6, 6-2, 6-1.

Second-seeded Serbian Jelena Jankovic will face China's Peng Shuai, a 6-3, 6-4 winner over Russian Yaroslava Shvedova.
