The 8th seed Zhang Shuai from China on Wednesday advanced to the women's singles quarterfinal after defeating Canadian player Aleksandra Wozniak 6-1, 6-4 at the Acapulco Open.

Ranked 50th, Zhang had a head to head record of 0-1 with Wozniak. She lost to Wozniak 6-3, 6-3 in the first round of Australia Open in 2012.

However, Zhang did well in their second encounter with high first-serve percentage and perfect baseline performance, taking the first set easily without giving her opponent many chances.

Wozniak tried to come back in the second set by changing her tactics to hit more high overhead balls, which created more troubles to Zhang to even the score at 4-4. But Zhang managed to win the following two games with better performance and wrap up the victory.

Zhang said she felt satisfied with her performance after winning the match.

"There are different challenges for me when facing different opponents. I played well today because I have made full preparations before," said Zhang, adding that Wozniak is also an excellent player who often changed tactics and strategy and created many troubles to her during the whole match.

Meanwhile, Zhang's coach Liu Shuo said Zhang performed well in her service game, adding that her first-serve percentage and net play point average have been greatly improved.

Zhang will next face Croatia's Ajla Tomljanovic on Thursday with a head to head record of 1-2.

She lost her last encounter to Tomljanovic 6-3, 7-5 at the quarterfinals of Texas Open in 2013.
