Kenya includes hurdler Mucheru into Olympic team
Last Updated(Beijing Time):2012-07-03 09:38

National Olympics Committee of Kenya (Nock) confirmed on Monday that hurdler Benson Mucheru is the latest addition to the country's team for London 2012.

Mucheru, 20, booked his maiden Olympics ticket at the just concluded African Athletics Championships in Benin where he ran 49. 45 for bronze in the 400m hurdles final.

"Mucheru is in the team. Any other who qualifies for the Olympics before July 7 when entries closed will also be included," NOCK chief, Kipchoge Keino, told the press at the team's training camp in Nairobi.

Mucheru beat the London A-standard of 49.50 and will join Vincent Koskei who ran 50.31 for fourth in the Olympics and will also be considered for the 4X400m relay after being among the quartet that won bronze in Benin.

Consequently, the latest addition will be among athletes leaving for the UK city of Bristol on Tuesday to begin a 14-day pre-Olympics training camp before moving to the Games' Village on July 16.

However, men and women 1500m runners who were in the original departure list for Tuesday will now remain in Kenya until July 22 when they will join their colleagues in the 5,000m and 10,000m in leaving for the showpiece that starts on July 27.

This was after NOCK backed down from plans to send them to Bristol alongside the 800m, 400m, 400m hurdles, 4X400m relay and the lone Javelin thrower, newly crowned African champion, Julius Yego.

"After meeting with Athletics Kenya this morning, we agreed the 1,500m runners would remain behind and train here but the rest will go to Bristol as planned," Keino declared.

However, he was none committal on whether the two-lap exponents led by Olympics champion, Pamela Jelimo and world record holder, David Rudisha who is the Team Kenya captain had consented to the early departure having opposed the plan.

"The 800m is just like a sprint event and they need to go to Bristol where there are good facilities and the altitude is not that different to what we have here. This has been discussed and agreed," the NOCK boss asserted.

He defended the Bristol plans that threatened to tear the athletics team apart with established distance runners threatening to boycott leaving for the UK city that will honor Keino with the Freedom of the City on Wednesday.

"Athletics Kenya had signed for the team to train in Bedford. If we changed and said the team would go there, what would they say? We consulted them on Bristol even before the trials and the government was also aware," the retired two-time Olympics gold winner stormed.

He disclosed that the verdict of the continued stay or withdrawal of Athens Olympics steeplechase champion, Ezekiel Kemboi, who has been accused of assaulting a female restaurateur, would be announced soon.

"Our people are almost concluding the inquiry and we shall state the way forward in this matter but for now, I wish the team all the best," Keino who was due to depart for Italy on Monday night said.

Kemboi was arraigned in an Eldoret court on Thursday charged with stabbing Ann Njeri, 26, after an alleged altercation when the said victim declined his lewd advances.
