Last Updated(Beijing Time):2012-07-11 15:17

Ugandan sports followers are happy their former star Dorcus Inzikuru has qualified for the 2012 London Olympics in 3,000 meters after struggling for months to beat the qualification times.

The former world star who has tried in the past three years to qualify for a world event but failed finally qualified last Friday after winning a 3,000m race at the 6th Edition of the International Athletics Bottrop Gala in Germany.

"This is very good for Uganda because Inzikuru has always been our star and missing out of Olympics would have been bad for her and the country," said Grace Adyedo, one of her fans.

Another sports fan Phillip Nkusi said that having Inzikuru who has done the country proud before was very good because she is one person you cannot write off easily.

In the race in Germany, Inzikuru recorded a time of 9:30.95 ahead of Kenya's Almaz Ayana.

"This is great for Inzikuru because we have always believed she still had what it takes to make the Ugandan team although she had to work hard. It is always good to have a very experienced athlete on your team like Inzikuru," said Uganda Athletics Federation (UAF) chairman Dominic Otuchet.

Former national athlete and now UAF general secretary Beatrice Ayikoru was a happy woman and said Inzikuru's qualification had proved that concentration and being strong headed is important.

"Many people thought Inzikuru never had the chance, but I personally always believed in her and always told her to forget the tough times she has been going through and only concentrate," said Ayikoru.

After becoming a mother four years ago and having marital problems Inzikuru has struggled to bounce back on the field and track.

Inzikuru's qualification brings the number of Ugandan athletes to the 2012 London Olympics to 16 with the track and field having the biggest contingent of 12.

The former world and Commonwealth steeplechase champion will be more than eager to win a gold medal like she did at the Helsinki 2007 world championships and 2008 Melbourne Commonwealth Games.

She will however have to be at her best to beat seasoned athletes who have been consistent over the years.

Following is the Uganda's final team for Olympics:
