Former world record holder Asafa Powell of Jamaica has pulled out of the London Grand Prix to ensure his fitness for the upcoming London Olympics, the organizers confirmed on Friday.
The 29-year-old sprinter is due to take on American rival Tyson Gay in the men's 100m event on Friday but chose to withdraw due to a groin strain.
"I need to ensure I'm ready for the games and cannot take any risks. I will be ready in August," said Powell in a statement from London GP organizers.
The track and field competitions of 2012 London Olympic Games will start on August 3. |
