Madagascar

The Republic of Madagascar, an island country located in the southwestern part of the Indian Ocean, covers an area of 590,000 square km and has a population of 16.91 million, mostly Malagasies. Local residents mainly believe in traditional religions, Christianity, and Islam. French is the official language, and Malagasy is the national language. Antananarivo is the national capital. Marc Ravalomanana is the current president.

China and Madagascar have been experiencing smooth development of bilateral ties since they established diplomatic relations on Nov. 6, 1972. Madagascar President Marc Ravalomanana visited China in 2004. Chinese Vice Premier Huang Ju and Wu Guanzheng, member of the Standing Committee of the Political Bureau of the Central Committee of the Communist Party of China, visited Madagascar in 2005 and 2006, respectively. Madagascar is a destination country for  Chinese tourists. Bilateral trade amounted to 197 million U.S. dollars in 2005.
