Located in the western part of Africa, the Republic of Guinea covers an area of 246,000 square km and has a population of about 9.4 million belonging to 20 ethnic groups. Most of the country's religious population is Muslim. French is the official language. Conakry is the national capital. The current president of Guinea is Lansana Conte.
Guinea is the first sub-Sahara African country to forge diplomatic relations with China. Sino-Guinea relations have been growing smoothly since two countries established diplomatic relations on October 14, 1959. The two countries have been cooperating effectively in the fields such as trade, culture, education and health. The Guinean foreign minister visited China in 2004 and 2006. Chinese Vice Premier Huang Ju visited Guinea in 2005. Bilateral trade was 147 million U.S. dollars in 2005. |
