Located on the northern coast of the Gulf of Guinea in western Africa, the Republic of Ghana covers an area of about 240,000 square km and has a population of 22 million belonging to four ethnic groups, mostly Christians. The official language is English. The national capital is Accra. During the colonial period, the country was known as the "Golden Coast." The current president is John Agyekum Kufuor.
