
The Republic of Gabon, lying on the central-western part of Africa, covers an area of 270,000 square km and has a population of 1.4 million belonging to 40-plus ethnic groups. Most of the residents believe in Catholicism, Christianity, Protestantism, Islam and Primitive religions. French is the official language. Libreville is the national capital. The current president is Omar Bongo.
The relationship between China and Gabon has been developing steadily since the establishment of diplomatic relationship between the two countries on April 20, 1974. The two countries have carried out close and friendly exchanges and cooperation in such fields as politics, economy, trade, culture, education and public health. In 2004, President Hu Jingtao and President Bongo exchanged visits, elevating bilateral relationships to a new level. Bilateral trade hit 393 million U.S. dollars in 2005.
